Ezra Pound
1885 CE–1972 CE · Poet · Hailey, Idaho Territory
Ezra Pound was an American poet, critic, and editor central to the modernist movement in English-language literature. Born in Idaho Territory in 1885 and raised near Philadelphia, he settled in Europe from 1908, living in London, Paris, and the Italian town of Rapallo. He shaped Imagism, promoted writers including W. B. Yeats, James Joyce, T. S. Eliot, and Ernest Hemingway, and edited Eliot's "The Waste Land." His long poem "The Cantos" occupied him for decades. During the Second World War he made pro-Axis radio broadcasts from Italy; arrested afterward, he was confined at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington from 1945 to 1958, then returned to Italy, where he died in Venice in 1972.
