Yair Chaim Bacharach (c. 1638–1702) was a towering figure of Ashkenazi Jewry in the early modern period, serving as rabbi of Worms and later of Mayence (Mainz). A prolific halakhic authority and mystic, he was renowned for his vast knowledge of Talmud, codes, and Kabbalistic tradition. His magnum opus, the *Chavot Yair* (Tents of Yair), a collection of over 230 responsa, became one of the most cited works in subsequent halakhic literature. He was known for his independence of judgment, his willingness to permit what others forbade, and his deep piety. His writings combined rigorous legal analysis with mystical insight, and he trained many students who spread his influence throughout European Jewish communities.
