James Buchanan
1791 CE–1868 CE · Washington, D.C.
James Buchanan was the 15th President, serving from 1857 to 1861 as a Democrat. An experienced diplomat who had served as Secretary of State and minister to Britain, he held office as sectional tensions over slavery intensified. Several Southern states declared secession in the final months of his term, on the eve of the Civil War.
