Benjamin Disraeli

Benjamin Disraeli was a British statesman and novelist who served as Prime Minister briefly in 1868 and again from 1874 to 1880. A leading figure of the Conservative Party, he was a rival of the Liberal leader William Gladstone and a favourite of Queen Victoria, for whom he secured the title Empress of India in 1876. Born into a Jewish family and baptized as a child into the Church of England, he was the first person of Jewish descent to become British prime minister. His government pursued imperial expansion and social reform at home.
