George III

1738 CE1820 CE · London

George III was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760, and from 1801 King of the United Kingdom, until his death in 1820. His long reign encompassed the loss of the American colonies in the War of American Independence and the prolonged struggle against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. From 1811 recurrent mental illness left him incapacitated, and his son governed as Prince Regent for the final decade of the reign. He was the first monarch of the House of Hanover to be born in Britain and to use English as his first language.
