Selim III
1761 CE–1808 CE · Constantinople
Selim III was an Ottoman ruler and reformer who sought to modernize the state and army, creating a European-style 'New Order' (Nizam-i Cedid) military force. His reforms met strong resistance from the Janissaries and conservative factions, and he was deposed in 1807. He was killed in 1808 during an attempt to restore him to the throne.
