Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya was a Spanish painter and printmaker active from the 1770s to the 1820s. Trained in Zaragoza and Madrid, he designed cartoons for the royal tapestry factory, entered the Royal Academy of San Fernando, and rose to First Court Painter under Charles IV. He produced portraits of the court and aristocracy, religious frescoes, and the print series Los Caprichos and The Disasters of War. A serious illness around 1793 left him deaf. His later "Black Paintings" and works such as The Third of May 1808 mark a shift toward darker, introspective subjects. He left Spain for Bordeaux in 1824 and died there in 1828.
