Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea)

Thayendanegea, known in English as Joseph Brant, was a Mohawk leader of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. Educated in both Mohawk and colonial traditions, he allied with the British during the American Revolution and became a prominent war leader and diplomat. After the war he helped resettle Mohawk and other Six Nations families on the Grand River in present-day Ontario, where he worked to secure their lands and translated religious texts into Mohawk. He died in 1807.
