Moctezuma II (Xocoyotzin)
1466 CE–1520 CE · Tenochtitlan
Moctezuma II, called Xocoyotzin ('the Younger'), was the ninth tlatoani of Tenochtitlan, ruling from 1502 until 1520, when the Mexica empire stood at its greatest extent. He was the reigning emperor when Hernán Cortés and his forces reached the capital in 1519; taken into Spanish custody, he died in 1520 amid the events that led to open war. His reign has come to symbolize the last era of Mexica sovereignty before the Spanish conquest.
