Ferdinand II of Aragon

Ferdinand II became king of Aragon in 1479, and with his wife Isabella I of Castile jointly ruled the united Spanish kingdoms. Together the 'Catholic Monarchs' completed the Reconquista in 1492, established the Spanish Inquisition, expelled the Jews who would not convert, and financed Columbus's voyage to the Americas. A shrewd diplomat and strategist, Ferdinand expanded Spanish power into Italy and Navarre, and Machiavelli cited him as the model of the successful 'new prince.' He died in 1516.
