Hieronymus Bosch
c. 1450 CE–c. 1516 CE · Painter · 's-Hertogenbosch
Hieronymus Bosch, born Jheronimus van Aken, was an Early Netherlandish painter active in the Duchy of Brabant. He descended from a family of painters and worked chiefly in oil on oak panel, producing religious scenes filled with dense, imaginative imagery of paradise, temptation, sin, and the torments of hell. His best-known works include triptychs such as The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Haywain, and The Temptation of St Anthony. Internationally sought after during his lifetime, he received commissions from patrons abroad. A member of the Brotherhood of Our Lady, he spent nearly his entire life in his native town, where he was among its wealthiest and most respected residents.
