Josquin des Prez was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance, active across the courts and chapels of France, Italy, and the Low Countries. He wrote masses, motets, and secular chansons, and was celebrated in his own lifetime and for generations after as a master of imitative polyphony and expressive text-setting. His documented service included the household of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza (whom he served in Milan and followed to Rome), the papal chapel, and the court of Duke Ercole I d'Este at Ferrara. He spent his final years as provost of the collegiate church of Notre-Dame at Condé-sur-l'Escaut, where he died on 27 August 1521.
