Joseph Haydn

Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical era. Born in the village of Rohrau, he trained as a chorister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna before working as a freelance musician. In 1761 he entered the service of the Esterházy princes, directing their musical establishment for nearly three decades, largely at Eisenstadt and the palace of Eszterháza. There he produced a vast body of symphonies, string quartets, masses, and operas. Two visits to London in the 1790s brought wide acclaim and the late "London" symphonies. His oratorios The Creation and The Seasons followed. He died in Vienna in 1809.
