Edmund Burke

Edmund Burke was an Irish-born statesman, orator, and political thinker who served for decades in the British House of Commons. His early "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful" (1757) shaped eighteenth-century aesthetics — the study of beauty and art. In politics he addressed the American colonies, the governance of India, and Catholic relief. His "Reflections on the Revolution in France" (1790), written against the upheaval then unfolding in France, became a foundational text in the tradition later called conservatism, which emphasizes gradual reform, inherited institutions, and social continuity. He settled in England and died at his estate near Beaconsfield.
