Yom Tov Lipmann Heller was a prominent Polish-Bohemian rabbi and Mishnah commentator of the early modern period, active in Prague, Moravia, Vienna, and finally Kraków. Born around 1578, he became renowned for his systematic and lucid commentary on the Mishnah, known as the Tosafot Yom Tov, which combined traditional rabbinic interpretation with grammatical precision and philosophical depth. He served as a dayan and chief rabbi in Prague, and later led the communities of Nikolsburg (Moravia) and Vienna, before settling as chief rabbi of Kraków. Heller endured severe persecution during the Thirty Years' War — including imprisonment on false charges — yet continued his scholarly work despite considerable hardship. His Mishnah commentary became a standard reference work in Jewish study, valued for its clarity and erudition. He died in Kraków in 1654, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important Mishnah scholars of the Ashkenazi tradition.
