Peter Paul Rubens

Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish painter, the leading figure of Baroque art in Northern Europe. Born in Siegen and raised in Cologne and Antwerp, he trained locally before spending 1600 to 1608 in Italy, studying antiquity and Renaissance masters while serving the Gonzaga court in Mantua. Returning to Antwerp, he ran one of Europe's largest workshops, producing altarpieces, mythological and historical scenes, portraits, and tapestry and book designs. He also worked as a diplomat, traveling to Spain and England on missions for the Habsburg regents. His compositions, marked by movement, color, and full forms, shaped European painting for generations. He died in Antwerp.
