Founder of Kosov-Vizhnitz
1768 CE–1825 CE · AH · Kosov (Kosiv)
R. Menachem Mendel Hager of Kosov (1768-1825) was the founder of the Kosov-Vizhnitz Hasidic dynasty, one of the largest surviving Hasidic courts. Born in Kolomea, he became a disciple of R. Mordechai of Neshchiz and R. Moshe Leib of Sassov, and established his own court in Kosov (Hutsulshchyna, then Galicia) around 1800.
His Ahavat Shalom is a substantial homiletic-mystical work that remains a central reference in the Vizhnitz tradition. His grandson R. Menachem Mendel Hager of Vizhnitz (1830-1884, the Tzemach Tzaddik) relocated the court to Vizhnitz in Bukovina, where the dynasty took the toponym it carries today. The Vizhnitz court survived World War II and rebuilt in Bnei Brak and Monsey, where it now ranks among the largest Hasidic communities globally.
