Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Gian Lorenzo Bernini was an Italian sculptor and architect, a central figure of the Baroque in 17th-century Rome. Born in Naples in 1598 to the sculptor Pietro Bernini, he moved to Rome as a boy and gained early patronage from Cardinal Scipione Borghese, producing marble groups such as Apollo and Daphne and David. Under successive popes he shaped much of Rome's public appearance, including the baldachin and the piazza colonnade at St. Peter's Basilica, the Cornaro Chapel, and numerous fountains. In 1665 he traveled to Paris at the summons of Louis XIV. He also worked as a painter, draftsman, and playwright, and died in Rome in 1680.
