Shlomo Goren (1918–1994) was a Polish-born Talmudic prodigy who became the first Chief Rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces, building its military rabbinate from 1948 to 1968, and later the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel (1972–1983). A prolific halachic author, he worked to apply Jewish law to the challenges of a modern Jewish state and army, and was a leading—and at times controversial—voice of Religious Zionism.
