John Donne

John Donne was an English poet and preacher, a leading poet of the metaphysical school. Born in London to a Roman Catholic family, he studied at Oxford and at Lincoln's Inn and served as secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton. His secret marriage to Anne More in 1601 cost him that position and brought years of financial hardship. His verse ranges from erotic elegies and songs to devotional sonnets; his prose includes meditations and sermons. He took Anglican orders in 1615 and was installed as Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in 1621, a post he held until his death. He was buried in St Paul's.
