Giuseppe Garibaldi

Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian general, patriot, and revolutionary whose military campaigns were central to the unification of Italy. A skilled guerrilla commander who had fought in South America, he led volunteer forces in the cause of Italian nationalism. His Expedition of the Thousand in 1860 conquered the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and delivered southern Italy to Victor Emmanuel II, a decisive step toward the unified Kingdom of Italy proclaimed in 1861. He became one of the most celebrated figures of the Risorgimento and died in 1882.
