Cochise (Cheis)

Cochise (Cheis) was a principal leader of the Chokonen band of the Chiricahua Apache in what is now southeastern Arizona. After a confrontation with U.S. troops in 1861, he led a sustained resistance against American forces for more than a decade. In 1872 he agreed to peace through negotiations with General Oliver Howard, aided by his friend Tom Jeffords, and settled on a reservation in the Chiricahua Mountains. He died there in 1874, remembered as one of the most respected Apache leaders.
