Andrew Johnson was the 17th President, serving from 1865 to 1869. He succeeded to the office after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, having been elected Vice President. His disputes with Congress over Reconstruction policy led the House to impeach him in 1868; he was acquitted in the Senate by a single vote.
