Benito Juárez

Benito Juárez (1806–1872) was a Mexican lawyer and statesman of Zapotec origin who served as president of Mexico from 1858 until his death in 1872. He was a leading figure of the Liberal movement during the Reform War and championed the constitutional Reform Laws that limited the privileges of the church and the military. He led the national resistance against the French intervention and the empire of Maximilian, which fell in 1867. He died in office in Mexico City in 1872.
