Mindon Min
1808 CE–1878 CE · Mandalay
Mindon Min (1808–1878) was the penultimate king of Burma, reigning over the Konbaung dynasty from 1853 to 1878. He founded the royal capital of Mandalay in 1857 and pursued administrative and economic modernization while attempting to preserve Burmese independence amid British colonial pressure after the loss of Lower Burma. A devout Buddhist, he convened the Fifth Buddhist Council at Mandalay in 1871 and had the Pali canon inscribed on stone tablets at the Kuthodaw Pagoda. He died in 1878, and Burma lost its remaining independence soon afterward under his successor.
