Tewodros II
1818 CE–1868 CE · Debre Tabor
Tewodros II crowned himself emperor of Ethiopia in 1855, ending the fragmented 'Era of the Princes' in which regional lords had eclipsed the crown. He sought to reunify and modernize the empire, curbing the power of provincial nobles and the church and attempting to build a national army and arsenal. A dispute with Britain led to a military expedition against his fortress at Magdala, where he died in 1868 rather than surrender. His reign is often seen as the beginning of modern Ethiopian history.
