Millard Fillmore was the 13th President, serving from 1850 to 1853 as a Whig. He succeeded to the office on the death of Zachary Taylor, having served as Vice President. He signed the Compromise of 1850, a set of measures addressing slavery in the new territories, and supported the U.S. naval expedition that opened relations with Japan.
