Napoleon III
1808 CE–1873 CE · Paris
Napoleon III, born Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte and a nephew of Napoleon I, was President of the French Second Republic from 1848 and then Emperor of the French from 1852 until 1870. He was elected president in 1848 and seized extended power in a coup in 1851 before proclaiming the Second Empire. His reign saw the modernization of France, the rebuilding of Paris, and active foreign intervention, but ended with France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. He was captured at the Battle of Sedan, deposed, and died in exile in England in 1873.
