Mikhail Bakunin

Mikhail Bakunin was a Russian political theorist and revolutionary, and a founding figure of collectivist anarchism. Born into a landed noble family, he left a military career for philosophy, immersing himself in Hegelian thought in Moscow and Berlin. From the 1840s he moved through the revolutionary circles of Europe — in Paris he met Karl Marx and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon before his 1847 expulsion — and he took part in the 1848 Prague Slav Congress and the May 1849 Dresden uprising, after which he was imprisoned and exiled to Siberia before escaping to Western Europe. Settling in Italy and then Switzerland, he built the organized anarchist movement and developed a critique of both state authority and Marxist centralism, clashing with Marx within the First International. His major writings include 'Statism and Anarchy' and the unfinished 'God and the State'. He died in Bern in 1876.
