Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev (c. 1740–1809) was a Hasidic master and one of the most beloved figures in Jewish spirituality. Born in Poland, he studied under the Maggid of Mezeritsch and became known for his ecstatic devotion and profound love for the Jewish people. He settled in Berditchev, Ukraine, where he established a thriving Hasidic court and earned the title "Advocate of Israel" (Kategan shel Yisrael) for his fervent, sometimes unorthodox prayers on behalf of the Jewish community. He was celebrated for his ability to find holiness in the simple acts of ordinary Jews and for his passionate, sometimes audacious conversations with God. His teachings and stories became foundational to Hasidic spirituality and continue to inspire Jewish life today.
