Ketzot HaChoshen
1745 CE–1812 CE · Acharonim · Kalush
Rabbi Aryeh Leib HaKohen Heller (c. 1745–1812) was one of the most influential halachic minds of his era, remembered above all for the Ketzot HaChoshen, his analytical commentary on the monetary law of the Shulchan Aruch (Choshen Mishpat). Born in Kalush in Galicia and a student of Rabbi Meshulam Igra, he served from 1788 until his death as rabbi of Stryi. His companion works — the Avnei Miluim on marriage law and the Shev Shmatta on foundational Talmudic problems — together with the Ketzot pioneered the rigorous analytical method (lomdus) that came to define modern Talmud study; all three remain core texts in every yeshiva.
