Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton was a statesman, political theorist, and writer of the founding era of the United States. Born in the West Indies and orphaned young, he emigrated to North America, studied at King's College in New York, and served as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and a principal author of the essays defending the proposed Constitution. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, he designed the federal financial system, including a national bank and assumption of state debts. He practiced law in New York and died in 1804 following a duel with Aaron Burr.
