Robert Burns

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and songwriter who wrote in both Scots and English. Raised on tenant farms in Ayrshire, he published 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect' (the Kilmarnock edition) in 1786, which brought him sudden fame and led to an enlarged Edinburgh edition. He worked as a farmer and later as an excise officer while continuing to write. Much of his later effort went into collecting, adapting, and composing Scottish songs for national song collections. His works include 'To a Mouse', 'Tam o' Shanter', 'A Red, Red Rose', and 'Auld Lang Syne'. He died in Dumfries in 1796, aged 37.
