Camillo Cavour

Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, was an Italian statesman who was the leading political architect of Italian unification. As Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont from 1852, he modernized the state and used diplomacy, including an alliance with France, to expand its territory at the expense of Austria. His maneuvering helped bring most of the Italian peninsula under the House of Savoy, and in 1861 he became the first Prime Minister of the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Italy. He died a few months later, in June 1861.
