Adolphe Thiers
1797 CE–1877 CE · Paris
Adolphe Thiers was a French statesman and historian who became the first President of the French Third Republic, serving from 1871 to 1873. He had earlier held ministerial office, including as prime minister, under the July Monarchy in the 1830s and 1840s. As head of the provisional government in 1871 he negotiated peace with Germany after the Franco-Prussian War and directed the suppression of the Paris Commune. He resigned the presidency in 1873 and died in 1877.
