1795 CE–1874 CE · Acharonim · Lissa (Leszno)
Serving as rabbi in Thorn (Toruń), Prussia, Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer was a prominent student of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and a key forerunner of modern religious Zionism. Through his work *Derishat Tzion*, he argued that the Jewish people's redemption required active, natural settlement of the Land of Israel as a precursor to the messianic era. His writings heavily influenced the Hibbat Tzion movement.
