Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce was the 14th President, serving from 1853 to 1857 as a Democrat. He had served in the U.S. Senate and as a general in the Mexican-American War. His signing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which allowed settlers to decide on slavery, reopened sectional conflict and led to violence in Kansas.
