Charlotte Brontë

Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three surviving Brontë sisters. Born in Thornton and raised at the parsonage in Haworth, West Yorkshire, she was the daughter of an Anglican clergyman. She was educated at the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge and at Roe Head, where she later taught, and studied in Brussels. In 1847 she published "Jane Eyre" under the pen name Currer Bell; later novels were "Shirley" (1849) and "Villette" (1853). She married Arthur Bell Nicholls in 1854 and died the following year at Haworth.
