Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865, as a Republican. He led the Union through the Civil War and issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring enslaved people in the rebelling states to be free. He championed the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery before his death in April 1865.
