Mirza Ghalib

Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, known by his pen names Ghalib and, earlier, Asad, was a poet of the late Mughal era who wrote in both Urdu and Persian. Born in Agra in 1797 and orphaned of his father young, he moved to Delhi after his marriage in 1810 and lived there most of his life. His Urdu ghazals, collected in the Divan-e-Ghalib, and his substantial Persian output are marked by philosophical reflection and formal invention. He held a stipend from the Mughal court and later the title Dabir-ul-Mulk. He witnessed the upheaval of 1857 in Delhi and died there in 1869.
