Nikolai Gogol

Nikolai Gogol was a writer of prose and drama in the Russian Empire, of Ukrainian Cossack gentry background. After schooling at Nizhyn, he moved to Saint Petersburg and won recognition with Ukrainian-themed tales, the comedy "The Government Inspector," and the story "The Overcoat." From 1836 he lived mostly abroad, chiefly in Rome, where he wrote much of his novel "Dead Souls," publishing its first part in 1842. His later years were marked by intense religious devotion and doubt about his art; he burned part of a "Dead Souls" sequel shortly before his death in Moscow in 1852. His work shaped later Russian literature.
