Franz Liszt

1811 CE1886 CE · Composer · Raiding (Doborján)

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian-born composer and pianist active across nineteenth-century Europe. Trained in Vienna and Paris, he became one of the era's most celebrated keyboard virtuosos, touring widely before turning increasingly to composition. From 1848 he served as court music director in Weimar, where he championed new works by contemporaries and developed the single-movement symphonic poem. His output includes piano works, songs, orchestral and sacred music. In later years he divided his time among Weimar, Rome, and Budapest, and took minor Catholic orders in 1865. He taught many pupils and died in Bayreuth in 1886.
