Auguste Rodin
1840 CE–1917 CE · Sculptor · Paris
Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor widely regarded as a founder of modern sculpture. Trained at the Petite École after three rejections by the École des Beaux-Arts, he worked for years as a decorative craftsman before a trip to Italy shaped a naturalistic personal style. His reputation was established by The Age of Bronze (1877). Major works include The Thinker, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, the monument to Balzac, and the unfinished Gates of Hell. He worked closely with sculptor Camille Claudel. In 1917 he married his lifelong companion Rose Beuret, weeks before her death, and died later that year at Meudon.
