Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann was a German composer and music critic of the Romantic era. Born in Zwickau, Saxony, he studied law at Leipzig and Heidelberg before turning fully to music under the piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara, a leading pianist, he married in 1840. A hand ailment ended his hopes of a virtuoso career, and he concentrated on composition, producing piano cycles, songs, chamber works, symphonies, and a piano concerto. He founded and edited the influential journal Neue Zeitschrift für Musik. After a mental breakdown and a suicide attempt in 1854, he entered an asylum at Endenich, near Bonn, where he died in 1856.
