Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller was a German playwright, poet, historian, and aesthetic theorist, a central figure of Weimar Classicism alongside Goethe. Trained in law and medicine at the Karlsschule military academy, he won early fame with the drama "Die Raeuber" (1781) and went on to write "Kabale und Liebe," "Don Carlos," the "Wallenstein" trilogy, "Maria Stuart," and "Wilhelm Tell." He served as professor of history at Jena and produced historical and philosophical works, including "On the Aesthetic Education of Man." His poem "An die Freude" (Ode to Joy) later formed the choral text of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. He died in Weimar in 1805.
