Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin — known to his students as Reb Chaim Volozhiner — was the foremost disciple of the Vilna Gaon and the founder of the Volozhin Yeshiva, the institution that defined the modern Lithuanian yeshiva model and shaped Jewish learning for the next century and a half.

His chief work, Nefesh HaChayim ("The Soul of Life"), is an extended philosophical exposition of Jewish belief and practice — a sustained argument that Torah study and mitzvot have real cosmic consequences, that the human being stands at the meeting point of the divine and the created worlds, and that what we do here shapes what happens above. It reads the Lurianic teachings into a non-Hasidic framework with deep care and precision.

He was widely respected as both a Talmudic scholar of the first rank and a thinker who could explain inner Jewish belief in ways the Lithuanian yeshiva world could embrace.
