Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel (c. 1748–1825), known as the Ohev Yisrael after his magnum opus, was a Hasidic master and the founder of the Apt dynasty. He was active primarily in Apt (Opatów), Poland, and became known for his passionate, emotionally expressive approach to Hasidic spirituality and his fierce defense of Jewish dignity. A devoted follower of earlier Hasidic luminaries, he became a major rebbe in his own right, attracting many disciples. He was remembered for his fiery temperament, his deep commitment to prayer and mystical practice, and his ability to inspire fervent devotion among his followers. His teachings, collected in the Ohev Yisrael, emphasize the immanence of the divine and the power of sincere prayer to elevate the soul.
