Leopold von Ranke

Leopold von Ranke was a German historian regarded as a founder of modern source-based history. Born in Wiehe in 1795 and educated at Leipzig, he taught at the Gymnasium in Frankfurt an der Oder before his 1824 study of the Latin and Germanic peoples earned him a professorship at the University of Berlin in 1825, which he held for the rest of his life. He championed archival research, critical evaluation of primary documents, and the university history seminar. His many works covered the papacy, the Reformation, and the histories of Prussia, France, and England. Ennobled in 1865, he continued writing a universal history into his final years, dying in Berlin in 1886.
