Polish rabbi and posek, Rabbi Yosef Shaul Nathanson served as rabbi of Lemberg and authored numerous halachic works in collaboration with his brother-in-law Rabbi Mordechai Zeeb Ettinger. He is best known for his multi-volume responsa *Sho'el u-Meshiv*, which addressed contemporary issues including permission for machinery in matzah baking. His rulings remain widely cited in halachic literature.

Rabbi Yosef Saul Nathanson was born in Berezhany (Berzan), Galicia, son of Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Nathanson, a wealthy businessman and profound talmudist.
Berezhany (Polish Brzeżany), in Eastern Galicia, was the seat of R. Shalom Mordechai Schwadron (the Maharsham) for over 40 years; one of the most-consulted halachic addresses of late-19th-century Galician Jewry.
