Giuseppe Mazzini

Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian political thinker, journalist, and organizer central to the movement for Italian unification. Born in Genoa in 1805, he trained in law before turning to nationalist activism. In 1831 he founded Giovine Italia (Young Italy), promoting a unified Italian republic through education and insurrection, and in 1834 helped found Young Europe in Switzerland. Arrests and exile took him through Marseille, Switzerland, and above all London, from which he directed correspondence and conspiratorial networks for decades. During the revolutions of 1848 he returned to the continent, reaching Milan, where he edited L'Italia del Popolo. In 1849 he served as a triumvir of the short-lived Roman Republic. He continued advocating republican and democratic ideals, at odds with monarchist unification; in 1870 he was arrested and briefly imprisoned at Gaeta, and spent his final years largely at Lugano editing Roma del Popolo before his death in Pisa in 1872.
